If you are huddled in your house looking for a completely delightful distraction, here you go! This is a binge-y read - once you start, you won’t stop until it’s over. It’s high romance in this wonderfully queer novel about characters you will quickly come to care about. Remy Devereux, a homicide detective with the SFPD, encounters Giana Falco, forensic scientist, as they hunt a Bay Area murderer, each of them complex, driven and compelling. This novel is a murder mystery and also a personal journey for each of them. It’s just on the edge of a film noir, with a queer twist. Congratulations to Dolores Arden on a page-turning debut. I can't believe this is a first offering from this author. About halfway through, I was so in love with her writing that I did a search for the rest of her works to set myself up for my next read, but was heartbroken to discover she has yet to release anything else. I will be waiting on pins and needles for her next book, because she is one author I cannot imagine could produce anything but another great read.This book was the perfect mix of romance and crime procedural. The construction of the world of police investigations and forensics was flawless. Not every writer who sets out to write a crime novel manages to pull it off believably, either from a lack of caring and research, or a willingness to sacrifice realistic portrayal in the service of a campier plot. The depiction of police work and forensics in this book was just the right balance of well-researched realism without crossing over into didactic details.The case(s) being investigated were nothing new (murdered women, possible mystery serial killer), but it held my interest. I started to suspect pretty quickly who the killer was, but I never felt frustrated with waiting for everyone else to figure it out; the writing was just so good that I was content to just be along for the ride. I will say, there did come a point where it felt like the investigation had taken a back seat to the back seat. When the resolution did come it was at pretty much the very last minute. But it was thrilling and well handled, so I didn't mind.The characters - lord, they were so well written! I liked both Remy and Giana a lot. And I cannot tell you how great it was to have two main characters who were not from Anglo-Saxon backgrounds. Remy and Giana both have comfortable, lived-in roots in the cultures they grew up in, and getting to see into their ethnic backgrounds, even just a little, added a special element to the story. The secondary cast was well written also. The reader despises exactly who they're meant to despise, and enjoys exactly who they're meant to enjoy. So yeah, I'd certainly say the characters were well drawn.As for the romance, it was excellent. The chemistry between Remy and Giana is off the charts. Their dynamic is extremely sexy and captivating. I confess, Remy's behavior didn't always make sense to me, but Giana stuck with her and the payoff was satisfying and sweet. I really like these two together.Overall, exceptional book! Wonderful writing! Can't wait to see more from Ms. Arden!
