What path will his outlook as a realist take Souma and the people of his country down? A revolutionary transferred-to-another-world administrative fantasy series starts here!Book How a Realist Hero Rebuilt the Kingdom: Volume 1 Review :
While my tastes usually meet with a decent amount of people's, this series might not appeal to everyone. Realist Hero is an administrative fiction series that follows Kazuya Souma's efforts to fix/save the kingdom he appears in after being summoned into another world as a hero. As a summoned hero, he has some special ability or skill that can be used to save the world from destruction at the hands of demons who have invaded this world from another dimension. However, instead of being sent to the front lines, the king in the country he was summoned to would rather keep him in his country as a bargaining chip. Unexpectedly, Kazuya displays an unnatural talent and knowledge about how a country is run, and the king and queen abdicate the throne to him in an attempt to save their failing country from total ruin and collapse. Kazuya sets out to fix the medieval-like country using modern knowledge in our/his world and applying it to theirs.I just finished reading this first entry in the series, but it already made it into my top 5 by the first 20 pages. The characters all stand out with their personalities and you can't help but love them and reading their interactions and thoughts. The author displays a lot of understanding/knowledge in many different areas related to government, politics, and administration, even referencing Machiavelli and his famous book The Prince multiple times during the second half of the book.I eagerly await the release of the English release of the second book and hope that we get a physical version sometime soon! 10\10 currently begging my friends to read this and fanboy over it with me. Before being magically summoned to another world, Souma Kazuya was a college student. Now, however, Souma is king of one of the smaller nations of this other world and plans to use his knowledge of economics to strengthen his kingdom. But not everyone agrees with Souma's policies.I quite liked Realist Hero. It's a different type of isekai. Instead of the protagonist being some super awesome person with an overpower ability that he gained upon entering the other world, Souma's expertise lies with his knowledge and his magical ability works best in administration than battle.I also love the relationship between Souma and Liscia, the daughter of the former king and Souma's betrothed. She's not stupid. She may not understand Souma's policies at first but once he starts to explain them she is quick to see what he is doing. She's also not the standard princess. Unlike other princesses who sit around looking pretty, Liscia is introduced as an officer of her country's military. It's a nice change of pace.I also love the bonus side story at the end of the volume. It follows one of Souma's magic-imbued dolls as it takes up a quest with some adventurers. It's cute and a nice change of pace to the main story. However, I do have several problems with the story. The first is how quick Souma acclimates to the situation and learning to use his magical ability. It is glossed over and summarized instead of being shown. My second problem is the pacing. The novel doesn't feel like one story but a collection of vignettes. As noted above, this works to the detriment of other parts of the story. My third problem is the exposition. It can get over done in places, even retelling the same info shortly after giving it. In other places it doesn't give exposition on things that really should had been introduced earlier. For example, the dukes and not following Souma with the potential of civil war happening. When they were first brought up I felt like I skipped some pages. It was very jarring. There is also times where Souma will make a policy and we immediately get exposition about its future and how great it was, completely ruining any tension or potential plot points for further volumes. Remember: show, don't tell.My final problem is the fledgling harem. I quite like the relationship between Souma and Liscia. I found it to be developing at a nice pace and doesn't feel forced. I can't say the same about the others. It really comes off as just there to fill a list than being a natural development of the story.Overall, a nice change of pace from regular isekai stories that reads fast, but suffers from pacing and storytelling issues. It just barely edged across the line between three and four stars for me. Hopefully the Dukedom Civil War will give the series the focus that it needs, as promised by the ending of this volume. The series has potential, the author just needs to use it to its fullest.
